Facebook and Instagram oEmbed change

Facebook and Instagram are changing the way their API uses oEmbed, an open source tool that allows users to directly link Facebook or Instagram content on a website. On October 24, 2020 the change will go into effect and existing oEmbed content may break.

What is changing?

The API change will no longer support unauthenticated oEmbed content requests, which displays as unavailable content. In addition, WordPress is removing Facebook and Instagram as oEmbed providers, which means plugin developers will need to manage oEmbed content.

What can I do?

If your site contains unauthenticated oEmbed content, you'll need a Facebook developer account and an App ID. Here are some available options:

  • Create a Facebook developer account, register an app, and install a fallback plugin like oEmbed Plus to ensure that content continues working. You can see the requirements and links to relevant steps for oEmbed in the developers.facebook.com documentation. This option provides the most control over how your data is managed.
  • Register and use a plugin like Jetpack 9.0 that has already taken the steps to ensure the API calls are authenticated with a valid token. This method provides less control over how your data is used.
