Create an SSH Key (Windows)

You can log in to your servers using SSH keys by creating them on your local machine, and then providing us your public key. However, there are a few complexities with SSH keys:

  • You must create the SSH key before creating the server; you cannot simply add SSH keys to existing servers.
  • If enabled, you can only log in to servers via SSH using computers that have your SSH keys.

SSH keys work off a public/private key pair. You don't need to understand the technology to make it work, but Caltech has an explanation here.

Create an SSH key pair

  1. From the PuTTY website, download, install, and run PuTTYgen.
  2. Click Generate.
  3. Follow the instructions in the application to generate the key pair.
  4. (Recommended) Enter and confirm a key passphrase.
  5. Click Save public key and Save private key, to save both files to your computer.

    Leave PuTTYgen open to use in the next step.

Add your public key to Cloud Servers

  1. In Cloud Servers, click SSH keys.
  2. Click Create key.
  3. Enter a Name, and then paste your public key in the Key field.

    Your public key displays at the top of PuTTYgen or you can locate it in the public key file you saved to your computer.

  4. Click OK.
