Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

Working with GoDaddy on my SSL issues have been a disaster.   In this continuing saga of ongoing incompetence, it appears that the SSL now ONLY works with the non-www version of my URL - not with the www version.   GoDaddy once again made me pay for an additional support fee, then waited 72 hours, (sites down for 3 days) then I get an email which says they can't support this kind of issue, because it is a Managed Wordpress issue, and the SSL department doesn't have any understanding of Wordpress.   The Managed Wordpress team kicks back an answer along the lines of "That is an SSL issue and we don't have training on that."  One person in the SSL department even told me he has never heard of Wordpress before.   It is so ridiculous.   image of a wagon with clowns and banda music playing comes into my mind.

I have now spent about over a dozen hours on hold, on phone/chat communication with "support"  getting kicked around like a football, and untrained reps who are more concerned about their ego then the resolution.  They make up stuff they have no idea what they are saying.  I see other customers on this community with the same problem have actually purchased a SECOND SSL for the www version of their URL.  I don't believe this is necessary, other hosts do not have this problem. This is a fantasy either cooked up by GoDaddy's greed/incompetence, or by someone who doesn't understand the certificate.

BUT... all that said, I simply cannot edit my HTACCESS file to forward both www and non-www URLs to the HTTPS address. We GoDaddy clients clearly are left with no option but to resolve this insanity ourselves, and post the results for others to use/modify.

I have a wordpress site, and after installing SSL certificate through godaddy, I tried to follow godaddy's instruction for redirecting http to https by modifying htaccess file.

However, after doing so, my website stops working.

    Error:

This site can’t be reached, took too long to respond.

    ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

The website doesn't work after reversing the changes either.

Error: server DNS address could not be found.

    ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

I can't access to neither http, https version, nor my backend for several days already.

To be clear, I am using MANAGED WORDPRESS.  I am using UCC SSL.  I want when someone goes to http://somethingbetterinc.com, that they are automatically redirected to https://www.somethingbetterinc.com

I do not want to set my Wordpress site to the non www version in the settings, I want to set this as the www for SEO reasons and I want to assign the UCC SSL SAN to the www version, and I want my htaccess file to redirect from non www version to the www version to be SSL protected.  We should be able to resolve EITHER DIRECTION, without being forced to assign another SAN to the non www version or buying a whole new SSL for that.   Other hosts are not being restrictive like this, or have not overlooked this.  It will hurt Godaddy's reputation tremendously for a few pennies extra Godaddy will make?

Makes no sense.  Someone is dropping the ball majorly over there.

The Godaddy sales rep told me I would be able to set up the other 9 SAN domains with 301 redirects so they redirect from the non www to the www and still show a green SSL padlock.  Turns out not to be true. When typing in the url of https://somedomain.com DIRECTLY LIKE THAT, EXACTLY IN BROWSER it errors out.     Granted, htaccess WILL redirect if typing in "only" >>   somedomain.com (no http) and it will show SSL working, BUT THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE.  We are talking about typing in " https://somedomain.com " DIRECTLY AND EXACTLY- it will error out show ERR CYPHER MISMATCH.

Even the plugin author of REALLY SIMPLE SSL confirmed this is an issue which Godaddy needs to fix.

When someone directly types in https://domain.com into the browser it show an ERR_CYPHER MISMATCH error?  << THE MAIN ISSUE.   It needs to be fixed at the server level, but no one  inside of Godaddy Managed Wordpress Hosting is smart enough to understand this isssue.  They cannot understand how to explain this to the one server technician in Godaddy Managed Wordpress who can actually fix this for everyone.

Of course there are no replies.

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

    Aloha,

I've been dealing with this same issue, for the past month as well, although, I am not on Managed WP sites, just a simple SAN with 8 sites. For some reason if I pay an extra $500 they can solve the whole thing, I have tried redirect with the htaccess file as they instructed but it does not always work, the more I spend time resarching this, the more it looks like a server configuration error not allowing the www redirect to occur, Tech support just keeps trying to upsell me for a simple fix that should be a couple lines of code. and once complete it should be done...

I am splitting my time between researching this and looking into another hosting service.

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

    Hi!

I've seen you solved your issue? May I ask how? I've acquired a new domain and 301 redirected  (masking) it to my Wordpress Managed url.

When I reach the URL through my new domain it shows as "not secure". but when using the original domain it is secure (https).

    Can I get some help?

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

Here is an example where you can redirect with https from non www to www. Of course save your current .htaccess before trying any code that you don't understand.

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} .
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
    RewriteRule ^ http%{ENV:protossl}://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
    RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

I just wanted to let you know I am having a version of the very same problem.  I have an SSL certificate and if I go straight to the domain without www it works.  If I go to the www version of the site, it's insecure and does NOT redirect.  I have a Managed Wordpress site and their web support says "for managed wordpress sites the redirect will happen automatically."  The first person tried to tell me I needed to use Simply SSL and install the plugin and wait 30 minutes.  Two hours later I called and spoke to the SSL department and he told me to take OFF the Simply SSL plugin and they would take care if it.  Still not working. Then blamed it on a plugin I had running on my site interfering with the redirect.  So I took it off.  Still not working.  Then he said it "must be something else in the code."  Finally, he e-mailed me and basically sent me a link to the same web page where I started that said they should take care of it for me if I have a managed site.  I haven't touched the code.  I am a beginner and built the entire site using the WordPress Dashboard via Go Daddy.  I am increasingly disappointed with Go Daddy every time I call.

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

I HATE GODADDY WITH A PASSION. I HAVE HAD NON-STOP ISSUES WITH SSL CERTIFICATES AND I CAN NOT GET THEM WORKING. I AM MOVING MY 20 HOSTED WEBSITES TO ANOTHER HOSTING COMPANY. THEY HAVE THE AUDACITY TO CLAIM IT'S ME. GODADDY IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF STRESS IN MY LIFE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS A CAKE WALK.

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

    Aloha Dave,

Yes frustrating to say the least. If go daddy is your number one stress, you have a good life. 😉 Take a deep breath and say thanks for the opportunity to learn and grow.

it seems like the SSL is a way for GoDaddy to generate more revenue. I started moving my websites to SiteGround. SSL free and easy for the basics.  Good luck.

Re: Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for Managed WordPress Sites - NIGHTMARE

I just experienced this exact issue. I went nuts adjusting the .htaccess file and my DNS records.

Here's what fixed it for me:

    • Go to your WP Admin > Settings page.
    • Look at your Wordpress Address and Site Address.
    • In my case, the Site Address was correct (https://www.domain.com)
    • But my Wordpress Address was incorrect (http://www.domain.com)
    • I was unable to change the Wordpress Address in the Settings page, so I had to change the URL in the database
      • Logged in to my database (phpMyAdmin)
      • Found the wp_options table
      • Found the siteurl option_name
      • Changed the option_value to https://www.domain.com
    • Reloaded my site
    • FIXED

    I hope this helps.
